MAHLE has long been the quiet innovator on the road with its lightweight hub motors – now it’s making some noise in the woods: With the new M40, MAHLE is entering the e-mountain bike segment and introducing a full-power mid-drive motor that’s a blast on the trail. Weighing just 2.5 kilograms, with 105 Newton-meters of torque and 850 watts of peak power, the M40 is one of the most powerful systems on the market yet remains surprisingly lightweight. The ultra-light magnesium housing is packed with pure high-tech: With 340 watts per kilogram, the drive offers one of the best power-to-weight ratios in its class and supports you with up to 600 percent of your own power. In other words: You’ll feel like you’re having a really good day going uphill – only every day.
High power is great, but it’s control that makes it usable. The M40 delivers a powerful yet very natural riding experience. The motor assistance remains smooth and predictable even at high cadences – ideal for technical trails and steep climbs.
The integrated software works with highly sensitive sensors: The system detects speed changes over a distance of less than three centimeters and dynamically adjusts the assistance. Motor Dynamic Overrun helps you roll smoothly over obstacles, while Hill Brake keeps you in place on steep climbs via “Auto Hold” –no more embarrassing rollbacks in front of the gondola line.
MAHLE has optimized energy consumption in the M40, particularly at high assistance levels. The result: smaller, lighter batteries with full power. You can choose between the new 48-volt iM5 batteries with 534 watt-hours (complete system with motor weighing just under five kilograms) and the iM8 with a whopping 800 watt-hours for up to 150 kilometers or 2,500 meters of elevation gain. Both batteries have the same design, are interchangeable, and support fast charging – perfect for anyone who commutes in the morning and adds an after-work ride in the afternoon.
The M40 is more than just an engine – it marks the launch of MAHLE’s new M-Series and is fully integrated into the familiar MAHLE ecosystem. Manufacturers can customize engine characteristics and riding feel, integrate accessories via the gateway, and build a wide variety of bikes using the same powertrain: from touring bikes to enduro machines.
With a new Head Unit+ display, the wireless Trio Remote, and full compatibility with existing MAHLE accessories, the M40 becomes the connected heart of modern e-MTBs. In short: a system for everyone who doesn’t just want to ride off-road, but wants to let the bike do the riding – but please, with style.
